Life after BBO - Luke's Story
The National Lottery Community Fund is the largest funder of community activity in the UK. It puts people in the lead to improve their lives and communities, often through small local projects. Building Better Opportunities is funded by the European Social Fund and The National Lottery Community Fund, the project is designed to tackle poverty and promote social inclusion throughout Worcestershire.
Luke came onto BBO wanting support to help secure him paid employment, with the help of BBO and Luke’s Job Coach Jo, he was successful in gaining a Production Operative role at Vision Labs. We recently caught up with Luke who received support from BBO in 2017, to see how he is getting on.
What was the biggest factor in making you decide to join the BBO programme?
Kidderminster JCP referred me to the BBO programme as I was looking for some extra support around my interview skills. My Job Coach Jo was able to offer me one-to-one tailored support allowing me to identify where I was struggling with interviews and gain relevant feedback to support me moving forward.
What part of BBO supported you the most?
Jo supported me to identify my barriers and helped me to improve these, by working with me on a one-to-one basis that was tailored to me, I was able to see where I was going wrong in interviews.
Jo was also very helpful when it came to identifying opportunities that were right for me to apply for and for giving me the confidence to be able to apply for them. I never felt rushed in my sessions with Jo or throughout my time on the BBO programme.
How did BBO help you to achieve your goals?
BBO gave me the support to be able to prepare for interviews confidently. Jo taught me the types of questions that are normally asked in an interview and the best answers and examples to give to specific questions based on my experience. She also taught me how to explain and word my answers appropriately.
I also took part in the BBO Stories Video, the filming for this really helped me with my confidence and it was nice to be able to share my story.
What do you enjoy the most about your job and why?
I enjoy that my employer allows me to push myself in work as it means I can learn new skills and expand on the skill set I already have.
Being in paid employment means that I can provide for my daughter and have been able to afford to move into a new house, having a steady income and not having the worries of claiming benefits is good.
How has having a job changed your life?
I am more outgoing and have a lot more confidence. I meet new people regularly and train new team members which has helped me develop my skills more.
I enjoy being in a full-time job.
What advice would you give to other people thinking about joining BBO?
BBO looks at what your needs are and the Job Coaches tailor the support they provide around these specific needs. They identify where you might be going wrong, and the areas that need extra support as well as identifying your transferable skills and how to talk about these at an interview to help your chances at getting work.
My Job Coach Jo was great at finding jobs that were suitable for my skills and supporting me to apply for these.
