What a difference a year makes! David’s story…
I found out about Building Better Opportunities (BBO) through Citizen Housing in April 2018. At this point in my life I felt I had very little prospects and didn’t think anyone would ever employ me again. I was suffering with my nerves and other medical problems and couldn’t see how I could move forward.
Like all new BBO participants, I was immediately assigned my own job coach, Cath from Citizen. Together we talked through the barriers I faced and what I could do to regain my confidence to start believing in myself.
We worked on job searches; learning how to apply and putting in meaningful applications using IT. It opened up a whole new world to me, and gave me hope that I would find a job I’d be happy in.
To my amazement very quickly I started getting replies to my applications, then interviews and then I secured a job as a bus driver.
One year later I am still driving a bus and life is really different for me. I have built up rapport with passengers and we are on first name terms, I really enjoy brightening up their day and taking the time to get to know them.
I’ve also been able to decorate my flat and go on a wonderful family holiday to Disneyland Paris with my son and grandchildren. I have just booked a cruise for April 2020 and planning a holiday in 2021 with my other son. I can now truly say that I look forward to every day.
For anyone thinking of joining the BBO programme I would say: “Take up this opportunity, work with your job coach towards your end goals and don’t be afraid to ask questions.”
