The National Lottery Community Fund is the largest funder of community activity in the UK. It puts people in the lead to improve their lives and communities, often through small local projects. Building Better Opportunities is funded by the European Social Fund and The National Lottery Community Fund, the project is designed to tackle poverty and promote social inclusion throughout Worcestershire, this project is proud to tell you the story of Chantal Whitehouse.
Chantal was referred to Vestia by Kidderminster Job Centre back in April of this year; at the time she was fed up with the situation she was in and was confused and frustrated about her future plans. Chantal was lacking motivation and confidence due to feeling let down after applying for jobs but having no luck with any of them. Chantal is a tenant of the Community Housing Group and was keen to get involved in the Building Better Opportunities programme. We inducted Chantal on the programme and started planning towards her future together.
When I met Chantal, she knew that she would like to work in the care sector; this was an interest of Chantal’s that had been sparked through personal experience of looking after and caring for her grandparents. It was very clear early on that Chantal was determined to move forward, she was eager and enthusiastic and applied herself well through engaging on the programme. Through regular meetings I was able to support Chantal with recognising and identifying her own skills and attributes to improve her self-esteem and confidence; we also developed her CV to reflect more up-to-date information with a fresh look. Chantal had asked for support with completing applications forms and looking at interview skills and prep, which again we were successful with and it was clear Chantal’s confidence was increasing in her own abilities.
After hours of job searching, many applications completed (both with support and towards the end, mostly independently) and a lot of frustration from not hearing back from jobs; Chantal was successful in gaining an interview and following this was offered a job at Westley Court Care Home in Cookley as a Care Assistant. Chantal was absolutely over the moon and couldn’t wait to get her start date. Chantal absolutely loves her new role and is so pleased to be working 36+ hours a week. Chantal is no longer feeling lost or unsure but instead has her confidence and purpose back. Chantal has thoroughly enjoyed her time on the programme and felt her job coach has “given her all the support in the world” and has recommended that “everyone should try and join BBO because they help with getting jobs”.
