Kerry was referred to Building Better Opportunities by her Job Centre Work Coach, who felt that she would benefit from the one-to-one support that could be provided through the programme. Kerry has Cerebral Palsy and although she has gained some fantastic qualifications, she has never before succeeded in gaining paid employment. Upon meeting Kerry we discussed her situation and she was not currently actively seeking work, although it was clear that she would love to work, even though she was claiming ESA. Having not worked previously, Kerry needed to start from the beginning and build up all the tools she would need for job searching including developing a CV and cover letter template, registering with job sites, exploring her skills and strengths and researching suitable positions.
It quickly became clear that Kerry is a very determined person and when she puts her mind to something she puts all her effort into it. We started by developing her CV, something which she is now very proud to have. Quickly her motivation increased and within a few short months Kerry was applying for jobs independently outside of our meetings. At this point we felt that the next step to improving her confidence and developing her skills would be to attend the Vestia Employability Skills Course, which she completed and gained a City & Guilds Level 1 qualification along with improving her confidence and practicing her interview skills in a mock interview.
One of the jobs that we supported Kerry in applying for was Retail and Admissions Clerk at West Midland Safari Park. Kerry attended her interview for this role and using the skills and techniques that she had learnt through both Building Better Opportunities and the Employability Skills Course, Kerry was successful in her application and started work at West Midland Safari Park the next week.
Kerry said ‘Building Better Opportunities is amazing. Attending weekly appointments has definitely improved my confidence, my understanding of my own skills and strengths and has given me the boost in motivation that I needed. Now I am employed and I couldn’t be happier! I would definitely recommend BBO to anyone wanting help in looking for work’
