Sometimes, all we need in life is a little helping hand from someone who can help to unlock our potential.

When Paul was referred to the BBO programme by Kidderminster JCP in March this year, he had been unemployed for over 5 years. Paul left school at the age of 15, with no qualifications, and has suffered over the years with mental health issues and personal family matters, which made it hard for him to find permanent employment.

Mental health can be a huge barrier to people entering into employment, and it is thought that 15-30% of workers will experience some form of mental health problem during their working lives (UK department of Health and the Confederation of British Industry*).

Paul is also a single parent, so he was keen to find work that suited his childcare responsibilities and/or identify suitable childcare that would fit around his needs.

Like all new BBO participants, Paul was immediately assigned his own job coach, Sanjay from Vestia. Together the two of them talked through was barriers Paul faced and what he could do to regain his confidence and find a job he’d be happy in.

Sanjay identified that Paul needed some help making changes to his CV, creating a cover letter and support with applying for jobs and submitting applications. In the past Paul had worked as a general handyman/ grounds maintenance but was keen to explore other career opportunities that could fit around his family life.

Paul said: “Having 1-2-1 support really helped me to get motivated again and Sanjay was so friendly and easy to talk to. Thanks to him, I was able to see what skills and experiences I could offer an employer and the value I could bring to a potential job.”

The job searching started and applications were completed, but Paul found he wasn’t getting any response from employers, which made Paul feel downhearted and discouraged.

With Sanjay’s continued help Paul went on to complete a Vestia employability course, which boosted his confidence and self-esteem.

Paul said: “I was really anxious about being in a classroom environment, so was apprehensive about doing the employability course. But I was reassured that it wasn’t going to be a large classroom and there would be no more than 6-8 people working with tutors. And once I’d got started, I felt much better in myself and more confident to continue with my job search.”

At their next meeting, Sanjay identified an opportunity with Morrisons who were looking for home delivery drivers. The hours were flexible around school pick-up and drop-offs, so that way Paul would have time for his family and childcare responsibilities. Paul applied for the job, went for his interview and found out he was successful!

Paul said: “I can’t thank Fusion BBO enough for supporting me. It’s been a tough few years, but I’m really excited about the future”. Thank you to Sanjay for helping me and I’m really looking forward to starting my new job with Morrisons”.
